Victoria’s “secret” is that lingerie is a billion dollar industry globally. Boy shorts, thongs, granny panties and dozens of other varieties of women’s underwear target all shapes and sizes. Who didn’t consider borrowing a pair of your man’s tighty whiteys when Carrie Bradshaw flawlessly introduced the look? What woman hasn’t suffered the embarrassment of a skirt tucked into pantyhose after using the bathroom? And how hard did you cringe when Farmer Ted flashed Molly Ringwald’s panties to all the geeks in Sixteen Candles, thinking ‘thank God those aren’t mine!’? Underwear-- a blessing or a curse?

What is the purpose of underwear? Where did it come from? Historical analysis says that ancient Roman men and women wore loincloth-style undergarments, but that ladies’ underwear as we know it was largely non-existent until Victorian times. Wikipedia’s definition of underwear is rather comprehensive and accurate. “[Undergarments] serve to keep outer garments from being soiled or damaged by bodily excretions, to lessen the friction of outerwear against the skin, to shape the body, and to provide concealment or support for parts of it. In cold weather, long underwear is sometimes worn to provide additional warmth. Special types of undergarments have religious significance. ...If made of suitable material or textile, some undergarments can serve as nightwear or swimsuits, and some are intended for sexual attraction or visual appeal.”

Clearly there are times when wearing underwear is beneficial or necessary; but are there instances when not wearing underwear is beneficial or necessary?

Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and Lindsay Lohan set the Commando Movement back a bit with their famously tacky paparazzi moments. It took the elegance of Gwyneth Paltrow and Eva Longoria to make not wearing underwear chic and classy.

Hollywood aside, are there medical benefits to going au naturel below the waist? Some doctors say yes. Undergarments made from synthetic fabrics may increase chances of developing yeast infections, so if you have a penchant for pretty panties by day, you may want to air out at night. Even Benjamin Franklin knew the benefits of an “air bath.” Thongs present a unique risk of transferring fecal bacteria from the anal area into the vagina or urinary tract. Natural fabrics such as cotton or silk are recommended.

Underwear or sans underwear is an individual choice, but perhaps adding a few commando days into your routine can be beneficial.
