midwifery: mid·wife·ry (mĭd-wĭf'ǝ-rē, mĭd'wīf'rē, -wī'fǝ-rē) n.
The techniques and practice of a midwife including childbirth assistance, the independent care of essentially normal healthy women and infants before, during, and after childbirth, and, in collaboration with medical personnel, the consultation, management, and referral of cases in which abnormalities develop.
Nurse-midwives are among the most highly trained of all registered nurses. At Gainesville OBGYN, midwives are a very integral part of everyday life. They are highly trained, highly trusted partners that have their own patient base. The families they care for come to the office for regular checkups and counseling.
Obstetrics & Midwives
Our midwives provide skilled assistance to expectant mothers throughout the childbirth process from pre-pregnancy counseling to postpartum care. They monitor maternal and fetal health throughout pregnancy, recognizing complications and referring patients to physicians when necessary. They provide expert assistance during delivery, reducing the incidence and severity of complications.
Routine Gynecological Care
Midwives perform annual examinations, prescribe medications and order tests. They provide counseling and family planning services, educating their clients about the uses and limitations of birth control products, and prescribing contraceptives as needed. Midwives can also help women going through menopause or perimenopause. When clients have more significant health problems, midwives refer them to a physician.

Favorite thing about being a midwife
One of my favorite things about midwifery is the special relationship I develop with each family. I love hearing how each couple met, meeting other family members and getting to know them personally. I feel very blessed and privileged to share the birth experiences of the women and families I care for.
Midwives believe in personal, individualized, family- centered care. Midwifery is about listening to women and providing care in a manner that is flexible, empowering, and supportive.
I am from Florida and have been back in Gainesville for 9 years. I have a son and daughter. For leisure time, I enjoy gardening, most any outdoor activities, and traveling.

"Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers- strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength." -Barbara Katz Rothman
I am a life-long resident of the Gainesville area, other than the two years I spent in Tanzania, East Africa as a Peace Corps Volunteer, where I met my husband who is from Brazil. We have two daughters, two dogs, two cats, a guinea pig, and a partridge in a pear tree. I enjoy reading, watching movies, watching Gator football and basketball, hosting potlucks with friends, and sitting on my porch swing watching my kids play.
